Rockstar, an immensely well directed, well thought of, well pictured, and well delivered film.
A movie that has shown that there are directors in this film industry who can come out of their comfort zone, and make something that is totally unique in itself. Rockstar has crossed all the boundaries of telling how a love story is told, especially to the Indian audiences. We are so pampered with the usual ways of watching movies, and we know come what may, the end has to be a "Happy Ending". I have been observing this trend since sometime, with movies like Anusha Rizvi's "Peepli Live", Kiran Rao's "Dhobi Ghat", Anurag Kashyap's "That Girl in Yellow Boots", these movies have delivered something that Indian audiences will take time to adopt to.
I termed the movie "dhobi ghat" as an "art film". It took a lot of time for me to understand what the stories wanted to say. It certainly is a new step into film making, something that is in lines with 'world cinema'.

Udaan, an absolutely outstanding piece of work by Vikram Aditya Motwane, has set standards for films in India, and the movie received what it was worth of . Udaan was the first Indian film to be a part of Cannes' official section in seven years. The film was officially selected to compete in the Un Certain Regard (A Certain Glance) category at the 2010 Cannes Film Festival. Indian film makers are gearing up to international standards, my language is not accurate, I'm a student of Business, and somehow these words find their way out each time I compare bodies of work.
Rockstar, started on a very normal mode, with introduction of the cast, Ranbir as a Delhi University student who wants to make a mark in Music. He admires Jim Morrison for the kind of stardom he had, even when he had shown a middle finger to the public, the public was hooting and howling to it. College events at Delhi University, ah! So we see the St Stephens Auditorium in the song, where Heer enters. The Legacy of these colleges in DU!

Shammi Kapoor, he is one of my dads favorite actors, my dad narrates to me about how he went on to watch his films and would save a 35 paise to watch the film that was screened in the theatre late 1960's. I now understand what my father truly meant. Shammi Kapoor carries with him a huge amount of energy, that compels you to fall in love with his character. His eyes spoke more, than all his expressions combined in the movie. It was his last movie before he passed away, and he surely has left us with his fabulous performance.
The Ustad Jameel Khan has an immense confidence that in Janardan, and asks Dhingra of the Platinum company to invest money in launching albums. The journey from Janardan to Rockstar Jordan actually starts here. If one notices, its always this 'one glance' by some great personality that has always worked. Remember Farhan Akhtar in Luck By Chance ? Dimple Kapadia gives a glance at one of his auditions, and Bang!, there Farhan is selected.
Ustads idea turns into reality and there goes Jordan making some fabulous music and offcourse a huge fan following.
Then there is a period where Jordan does really well and gets to go to Prague, where he meets Heer.
They meet, make a list, have an awesome time, are bonded really well after the shows that happen. Heer is a woman who is married and has to maintain some distance even if it is with Jordan. She hates being close to Jordan & something that really pulls her from him is her marriage and that according to the "society" this is completely un acceptable.
Jordan turns into a rebellion, and opposes strong and sharp reactions of Heer. After a lot of bad experiences he returns to India, and goes on with his journey. The story continues.
The song "Dichotomy of Fame":
It is a song that has moved me so much that I close my eyes and listen to it, try and figure what it wants to convey. The video is pictured really well, it symbolises 'Stardom', and its two sides, one that gives you the appreciation that you deserve, and the other that takes away the soul in you and leaves you as an object of desire to the world. The song clearly shows how a star would have felt when he went to meet his loved ones, his friends, and how he ends up with only clicking photographs with all the people who are invited for the evening. Jordan, in fact, says to one of his friends "Arre Mil to le" ( atleast talk to me for a while), but the friend does not even hear to it and takes Jordans hand on his shoulder to get a photo clicked. The Dichotomy of Fame, indeed.
Superb song and the video totally matches to all the tunes in the song.
I think Rockstar is a masterpiece. Aarti Bajaj has made sharp cuts in the editing, which are very new to the audiences, especially in India. And personally, hats off to Irshad Kamil for the extremely meaningful and touching lyrics for all the songs. "Naadan Parinde" just has so much of meaning to it, especially the last verse which makes you think beyond all the boundaries of hope, wishes and desires, and compels you to imagine the amount of love that still lies in a person.
Imtiaz Ali is a visionary, makes his cinema his own way, and doesn't leave a chance to leave a mark on his audience. Absolutely moving.

ReplyDeletethe dichotomy of fame actually want to convey the audiences that ones a person gets respect n alot of success den deir will also comes a time when the rockstar just feel he/she is not more dan a object coz evry bdy meet him to click pics with him coz rockstar has feelings he also want to enjoy the world he alao want a dear person to share his sorrows n happines .. so as we hv seen in the end of the theme when ranbir just stop playing guitar when hes in a deep thought coz rockstar is also a humanbeing n at certain point of life a person just fedup of being same .. in the scene when his manager takes him out of red light area .. n ask him why hes doing like this den ranbir says " yehi chahta tha na mai.. magar khushi tu kahin b nhi hai dhoor dhor thak nahi hai .. mujhe khud b acha nhi lagta "
